The Houmas House Estate was a sugarcane plantation during the 1800’s.

Houmas House is located in Darrow, LA which is 30 minutes from Baton Rouge and an hour from New Orleans. If you don’t have your own transportation, I recommend to book a tour. I booked this tour from Grayline. Whether you do a tour or do a self drive to the location, you can go on a tour of the house. My guide was Marcy and she was phenomenal.
There are two restaurants, a wine cellar, and a bar located on the property. You can even stay at the inn at Houmas House.

One of my favorite things about the Houmas House is the previous owners’ (and current owner’s) love for dogs. There are a bunch of dogs statues outside the house, paintings of dogs, dog pillows, and the previous owner had his dog marry another dog named Gracy who has a prenup.

Fun facts…
…about the grey wigs. It is horse hair from England which would be used in courtrooms and ballrooms. They are very valuable and men would wear them because grey was a symbol of wisdom.
Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964) was filmed at The Houmas House.
The Houmas House has 8 fireplaces.
Teddy Roosevelt stayed here twice.
Craig Black is the gardener here and he is self taught. (The gardens here are beautiful!)
It would take 2 hours to make a cup of coffee back in day because you would have to manually smash coffee beans.
